
Walkerston By Pass
The Walkerston Bypass project is a greenfield 10.4km two lane highway that connects the Mackay Ring Road South of Mackay with the Peak Downs Highway. This is a critical piece of infrastructure that will relieve congestion and improving traffic flow that will underpin the growth aspirations in the region for future generations.

SCOPE
Hiway manufactured foam bitumen pavement material using both in-situ and ex-situ manufactured material in a hybrid ‘first of its kind process’.
KEY CHALLENGES
The project required a compressed construction period.
The site was impacted by several significant weather events including two cyclones.
Material supply challenges and maintaining the stringent quality requirements were challenging facets of this contract.

SOLUTIONS
We proactively undertook several mix design scenarios using iterations of multiple material sources to maximise available material without any compromise to quality. Hiway quickly deployed their Hybrid foam approach, utilising both Plant Mix and in-situ in both layers to increase productivity This allowed for multiple production work fronts to be undertaken simultaneously.

200,000 tonnes of foam bitumen pavement material in accordance with TMS Specifications MRTS 09 and MRTS 07a and MRTS 07b
Recovered programme slippage experienced by the client due to cyclonic impacts by deploying additional resources and the hybrid approach
