SCOPE
Hiway were engaged to the project for in-situ recycling the steep access road slopes that lead to the platforms for the wind turbines, these were to remain unsealed and would be used to carry large loads when transportation of the turbines to each foundation was constructed.
KEY CHALLENGES
Challenging terrain with steep slopes exceeding 18%
Very narrow shoulders required a methodology to work up and down steep slopes
Changeable weather conditions and exposure
The remote location increased the challenges for supply chain logistics

SOLUTIONS
The technical and design team worked with the client to optimise the pavement design and develop a solution which would provide a robust and cost-effective, all-weather access track that could cater for the required axle loading on extreme slopes. A specialised emulsion binder was developed to meet the challenging technical requirements and a bespoke installation methodology created to deal with the challenging terrain.

OUTCOMES
Over 35,000m2 of pavement delivered up to gradients of 18%
New methodology developed for working both up and down steep slopes
New methodology and bespoke equipment designed and developed by Hiway for emulsion in-situ recycling and extreme grade.
