Innovation for lower carbon sustainable outcomes

The purpose of innovation is to drive positive change by creating new or improved products, services, processes, or methods that add value to our customers and the communities we serve. It enhances efficiency and productivity, fosters economic growth, and promotes sustainable solutions to complex problems, ultimately aiming to improve quality of life and create a better future.

Hiway is at the forefront of innovation development and has been working closely with its customers in understanding their issues with traditional infrastructure products and solutions. With a strong focus on performance, efficiency and increased client value, Hiway has developed the Masters Range which provide a suite of new innovative products specifically designed to provide performance benefits as well as low carbon outcomes for our customers.

MasterFlex C

Cementitious agents remain pivotal in construction, facilitating the creation of robust and adaptable cement-based materials. MasterFlex C, a polymer modification when used alongside traditional in-situ recycling agents enables increased usage of cementitious agents, enhancing engineering properties. Benefits include reduced risk of premature fatigue failure, minimised water ingress, and heightened tensile, flexural, and CBR strengths.

MasterFlex P

MasterFlex P, like MasterFlex C, is a polymer modification used alongside traditional in-situ recycling agents and enables increased usage of cementitious agents, enhancing engineering properties. Benefits include reduced risk of premature fatigue failure, minimised water ingress, and heightened tensile, flexural, and CBR strengths. MasterFlex P is, however, a specially developed powder which provides for additional benefits in applying to the pavement and can be blended with additional powdered binders.

MasterProof

Where unsealed roads or platforms require some structural improvements by in-situ recycling alongside dust suppression, Hiway MasterProof is a cost effective eco-friendly long-term stabiliser and dust suppressant. MasterProof is a non-hydraulic setting cementitious product and once used to recycle existing materials and cured produces a strong, wear resistant unsealed pavement that contains waterproofing agents to create a durable, water-resistant matrix. MasterProof is environmentally benign and biodegradable and able to provide substantial strength and resilience gains to almost all types of soil and aggregate and is suitable for use not only in unsealed roads, but also mining, renewables and forestry roads, construction sites and industrial hardstands.

MasterScrim

Historically, the only option to remove bitumen that has flushed to the surface on a chip sealed road is to use high pressure water texturisation. This however impacts the durability and life expectancy of the pavement and creates a significant environmental problem.

To address this problem Hiway has developed Hiway MasterScrim™ which is an innovative technology that retexturises the flushed surface without the removal of the surfacing’s designed binder content. This solution is completed rapidly on-site and returns the seal to its original designed volumetrics.

MasterPave

MasterPave AR

Cold In-Place Asphalt Recycling is a process in which the existing asphalt pavement is milled off, crushed, mixed with an emulsion bitumen, and then placed down and compacted to create a new pavement layer, utilising a specialised recycler and paver. Unlike traditional hot mix asphalt methods, which necessitate the removal of existing asphalt from the site, cold in-place recycling does not require the importation of new materials, thus avoiding the high energy demands of heating asphalt at a central plant. Undertaking cold in-place recycling offers a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution. Implementing this process on oxidised asphalt pavements will enhance layer performance while minimising the need for additional materials and energy to rehabilitate the asphalt layer.

MasterPave FR

Foamed Bitumen technology presents clear advantages, making it an appealing solution for recycling. It offers cost-effectiveness, swift construction, enhanced pavement performance including moisture resilience, and improved shear capacity, even with subpar materials. The process typically starts with milling or pulverizing the existing pavement to a set depth, breaking down materials and establishing a suitable base for foamed bitumen treatment. Utilising specialised recyclers and pavers yields a stabilised granular material with asphalt-like properties, streamlining the finishing process without the need for extra surface preparation before applying the wearing surface.

MasterDust

Australia and New Zealand's unsealed roads kick up dust, posing problems for users, the environment, and nearby residents or workers. To tackle this Hiway has collaborated with research partner to develop Hiway MasterDust, a non-corrosive, environmentally friendly, cost-effective dust suppression solution. It continues to draw moisture from the air, binding fine soil particles to larger aggregates, significantly reducing dust. MasterDust also boosts road material strength in dry conditions, while meeting PM10 environmental dust standards. It's not just for unsealed roads but also ideal for forestry, heavy duty hardstands, mining, renewables and agricultural service roads, plus construction and temporary works.

MasterCarb

MasterCarb A

Sustainability, reuse, recycling and pavement resilience is at the forefront of the Hiway groups innovative objectives.

MasterCarb A consists of utilising and reusing the existing in-situ granular pavement materials using a specially developed binder system, developed by our strategic partners C-Twelve, incorporating a treated organic product that sequesters carbon giving the benefit to the client creating a carbon neutral project, often delivering a carbon negative outcome.

MasterCarb A is essentially a cold in-situ recycled asphalt, and the unique physical properties produce an enhanced pavement performance often exceeding that of an imported dense asphalt treatment. This performance provides for a strongly bound yet flexible pavement layer with high modulus, enhanced fatigue resistance, and a superior rut resistance. MasterCarb A can be used to rehabilitate Ports, Highway, Rail, Mining, Airport, Renewable and Residential development infrastructures and was used extensively in our Watheroo Grain Storage project.

MasterCarb C

In-situ cement recycling is a tried and trusted method of recycling pavement materials since the Romans developed the process many centuries ago. Hiway is at the forefront of the development of a low carbon alternative binder solution that can replace cement entirely using an innovative chemical process. This process uses proprietary constituents that allows development of an equally strong recycled pavement similar to cement modification with the added benefit of substantially lower embodied carbon position. MasterCarb C also reduces shrinkage/crack risk when compared to cement and can incorporate set time modifiers to allow variability in working times.

MasterCarb C can be used to rehabilitate any civil infrastructure project that would otherwise use cement or cementitious binders.

MasterCarb CR

In-situ Cement pavement recycling has been a core activity for Hiway enabling the binding of low plasticity granular materials or be used as a cementitious blend for a wide range of marginal to premium materials since our establishment since 1986. It is a cost-effective means of reuse by recycling in-situ aged pavement materials to gain additional strength, durability and moisture resilience. Hiway has developed an innovative process where a sequestration medium is incorporated into the cement blend to provide embodied carbon neutral or negative outcomes for the entire in-situ recycling process, while at the same time achieving tangible performance gains.

MasterCarb CR can be used to rehabilitate any civil infrastructure project that would otherwise use cement or cementitious binders but deliver a carbon zero outcome.

MasterCarb LR

In-situ Lime pavement recycling has been a core activity for Hiway with modification of high plasticity soils. It is a cost-effective means of reuse by recycling in-situ aged or weak pavement materials to gain additional strength, dry back wet of optimum materials and achieve durability and moisture resilience. Hiway has developed an innovative process where a sequestration medium is incorporated into the lime blend to provide embodied carbon neutral or negative outcome for the entire in-situ recycling process, while at the same time achieving tangible performance gains.

MasterCarb LR can be used to rehabilitate any civil infrastructure project that would otherwise use lime or lime blends but deliver a carbon zero outcome.
