Powering Progress

Resilient roads for South Australia’s renewable future

With precision in every path and purpose in every project, HIWAY drives innovative infrastructure for the Goyder Wind Farm.

South Australia’s Goyder Renewables Zone is stepping into the spotlight as a key contributor to the nation’s sustainable energy goals. Once a farming region, it’s now on track to generate clean, renewable energy by tapping into the state’s natural resources, delivering reliable power for generations to come.

Powering renewable energy innovation

The Goyder South Hybrid Renewable Energy Facility is central to this shift, set to generate 1.2GW of wind energy, 900MW/1,800MWh of battery storage, and 600MW of solar energy. The first stage includes the installation of 38 wind turbines in Stage 1A and 37 turbines in Stage 1B, located between the towns of Burra and Robertson, approximately 100km northeast of Adelaide.

Navigating the terrain — rising to the challenge

HIWAY was tasked with building robust internal roads to support the construction and long-term operation of the turbines. The goal was to ensure all-weather access, reduce future maintenance costs, and create roads that could handle the site’s steep inclines.

The terrain presented a series of challenges, from high natural rock formations offering quality materials for pavement construction, to slopes of up to 20%, which made stability a concern. On top of that, the narrow road corridors required careful navigation, demanding strict safety measures. Achieving the right mix for the pavement and applying the correct amount of bitumen emulsion was critical to meeting the high standards set for this project.

Paving the path to renewable progress

HIWAY embraced the challenge, delivering an eco-conscious solution tailored to the unique demands of the site. To ensure consistency and manage the steep gradients, we used dual stabilisers attached to water carts, preventing slippage and ensuring precise mixing — even in damp conditions.

This approach allowed us to mix multiple products simultaneously while maintaining the stringent standards of the project. The result? A 150mm deep stabilised pavement, treated with a proprietary bitumen emulsion at a rate of 20L per m³, creating durable, long-lasting roads perfect for this energy-generating venture.

Durable roads, sustainable results

The stabilised pavements we built for the Goyder South project are designed to stand the test of time. Not only do they hold up against the site’s steep gradients and unpredictable weather, but our stabilisation techniques also reduce the environmental impact compared to traditional methods, ensuring a greener construction process.

Beyond durability, our approach also streamlined the project timeline by reducing ongoing maintenance needs and allowing vehicles, trucks, and future maintenance teams to move freely and safely. This efficient process ensured smooth operations and kept the project moving forward.

We also improved on-site safety by controlling dust with effective binders, which enhanced the overall work environment. And by reducing construction time through stabilisation, we helped accelerate the project’s delivery, ensuring the timely completion of the Goyder South Hybrid Renewable Energy Facility.

A clear path to clean energy

HIWAY’s expert planning and cutting-edge equipment were key to overcoming the challenges of the Goyder South project, leading to a successful and timely delivery. With these resilient pathways in place, South Australia is one step closer to securing a cleaner, more sustainable energy future — one that will benefit us all in years to come.

Our communities deserve it. Our environment depends on it.
